June 1970 - May 1971: A CO 159th Avn Bn, Chinooks, 101st, Phu Bai Viet
Nam.
My helicopter was shot down on Ripcord on July 18th 1970. We landed in
the 105 ammo area on top of the base. I was a crew member left door
gunner. I recently went to a 30 year Ripcord Association reunion in
Shreveport, LA. I looking for my CO pilot Cpt. Grove who was with me
that day. I'm also looking for soldiers from A Co who were there
during June 1970 - May 1971. I'm glad there is a site like this so
everyone read about what all soldiers had to go thru in Viet Nam.
Best wishes to all and have a Merry Christmas
and Happy and safe New Year.

I've contacted Jo Billings, Art Martin, and Charley Downes; guys that I
knew in Kontum in 1968. Also looking for the Crew that medevaced me
from the revetments on the morning of January 30; I'm pretty sure it was
a Gunship and might have been from Camp Holloway. They took me to the
71st Evac at Pleiku. If it helps, I had a gunshot wound to the neck.
Also looking to hear from others who remember me from 1968 and am really
looking forward to the Reunion in May of 2001! Thanks!!!!

I was in Nam from June 69 to June 70. but I got to the 57th on July
4th,1969. I was in the Avioncs shop there until we transfered to An Khe
in 70. I drove point in the convoy going to An Khe from Kontum in 70.
Then I was detached to the Avionics shop at 52nd CAB BN headquarters,
where there were men from all of the companies of the 52nd. There were
one or two from each company's Avionics shop represented there. Then I
went back to the 57th in An Khe to process out to go back to the
States.I left as a SP/5 and went to Germany. I was stationed at a
transportation company in Germany, where, later on a guy from the 57th
nicknamed "Lurch" was stationed with me for a while.

Dear Sirs: I am trying to locate someone that might have some answers
to my problems. This is what I am faced with.
I am trying to locate grants and scholarships or even special funding
that will help me pay for me to enroll into a commercial helicopter
flight school, I want very much to fly helicopters for a living, I
already have some unloged flight hours in a 204 and love it so much
that I am willing to try any thing in order to recieve the funding
needed for this, even entering into a contract that will train me in
return for employment at a lower rate of pay.
I cannot recieve government funding for schools because the colleges do
not offer these courses,my credit will not allow me to borrow the
amount as it is to high, the millitary will not except me as my age is
aver 30. I am at a loss, can you please help me with whatever
information that will allow me to find the funding needed to pay for my
schooling.
Thank you for your attention in this matter.
Sincerely Dave Johnson

Any one out there remember two door-gunners from the yellow(second) flight platoon name Jim Cooke or Jim Holte? There were there in 19 68-69. Probably the latter. 1969. Holte was from North Dakota and I had a visit with him in 1982. I have lost track of him since. Holte I believe transfered in from the Infantry. He was blond, about 5' 10" tall and average build.
Jim Cooke was about 5'9" dark hair and a mustache (slim). If anyone of you has a roster for the 1969 Gladiators let me know also. Both of them could be on it. I have the original Roster of the 57th AHC. My name is not on that roster either so there has been a lack of documentation. I transfered in from the 981 MPSD out of Phu Tai in Sept. 1968. I guess that is how it goes. Jim Cooke also transfered in from either infantry or another MOS. If any one knows the where abouts of WO2 Paul Brannon please send me his address. I am in need of getting in contact with him. A bunch of us are also looking to find WO2 Mulkey. He lived out in Alabama or in that

Major Guess, Paul Hoovler and I, crewed your ship "Gladiator 6" in
Vietnam. Paul was the crewchief, and I the gunner. If you get this
message, please contact us. Thank you, and am proud to have served
with you sir, I had the utmost respect for you. You were an "effective

Larry, just stopping in to check things out. I noticed in the revised
history of the unit that on Feb 19, 1967 it mentions that the CE was
rescued from the shoot down during the FOB extraction. This should be
corrected, Melvin Dye was KIA along withe his gunner. Both are listed
that way on the honor roll but the history is incorrect.
Great site, I always enjoy checking in to see who has been here.

I am looking to find the name of the Sarge that worked in supply. He and I went home together in June 69 as I recall. He was from the east coast area.Tall slim and a mustache.
Dark brown hair and had a southern accent.I need to know his name for a book I am writing.
Think he was from Carolina's or Kentucky,or Tennesee area.We took a twin prop plane out of Kontum air field. The color of the plane was off white and maroon if I recall. Also I have name of the monkey in the cage that I use to handle. Someone told me his name was "SMACK"! It still doesn't ring a bell.I helped TOP with taking care of him. Had a lease and choke chain to control him. He could be a nasty little guy. Remember???? My memory is slowly going.Remember the wonderful life in the tents. No oder there huh! Who was the Sarge from security that went to Pleiku and got into a brawl in the NCO club? Something about a grenade? How about the Doc's in the Medical building just behind Supply or a little south east of it? 68-69 June. Hope all you Gla

I served with the 57th assault helicopter company from May of 69 to
March of 70. Before departing for the Nam I asked my brother what it
was like over there. {he had just returned a month or so prior} He
put it to me this way. Well it all depends on where you end up over
there and what type of outfit you land in. For all of us that were in
Kontum, it was definitely a unique place with a very unusual mission.
It's been over 30 years for me and I still often think of those times.
What's amazing is that I stumbled onto this site quite by accident and
have found it to be very informative and full of old memories. Thanks

I accidentally came across your website and I wanted to say I really
appreciate what you have done. I was a door gunner in the 57th AHC

of the people in the group.
It was kind of silly when I first attempted to recognize anyone until I
thought of how much I had changed in 28 years.
I have lots of pictures of Camp Holloway if you want/need any. I
suppose everyone has those.

Was assigned to Team Cougar, 57th AHC, Camp Holloway. Flew the nighthawk
ship, COUGAR'S REVENGE from Apr to Nov 72. It was a pleasure working and
flying with everyone. We had a great CO in MAJ Hughes and an excellent
PLT LDR, CPT "MAC" (Robert Mc Donald). Thanks to CPT Hutchison (formerly
with Pink Panthers) and CW2 Wayne Simmons, two of the most caring,
condident, and knowledgeable pilots I learned from and flew with. To all
CE's, especially those who flew with and crewed REVENGE, "THANKS" for a
job well done. You guys deserve more credit than you will ever realize;
you worked hard and played hard. Thanks CE's Bob Imboden, Monte Bollar,
Jerry Stephens, Robert Terry, -&- Terry Kindred, just to name a few. All
the best, Greg Hutson, Cougar 54.

Just thought I'd come back to say hello. This site is truly amazing,
and a fitting tribute to all the men who served with the 57th!
My "compliments to the chef" for this excellent web! I flew with Sp/5
Paul Hoovler, Hard Stripped buck Sgt.Thayer, Capt.John Dalton, and a few
WO's who's names escape me. I was not a member of a platoon, only
filled in as a gunner when a body was needed. Flew Slicks and Gunships,
mostly from Nov.67, to April 68. I became a jack of all trades, POL,
Radio Operator in Operations Tent, Perimeter Security. Went to
Australia for R-&-R with Richie Klein, Larry Stack, and Larry Nobles.
Would like to say hello to some people I remember: Maj. Burnison,
Maj.Guess, Capt's Dalton, Danley, Riddle, Knupp,"Top Kick" 1st Sgt.
Whitney, Sgt's Hogue, Maxwell, Caywood and Schuronce(spelling?) Other
guys I remember were: Washington, Harville, Bader, Taylor, Shoemaker,
Howard, Galarza, Sinclair, Winters, Fagan, Blanco, and Sommerville.

I served with the Gladiators as a Warrant Officer Pilot from May '68 to
May '69. I flew with Dean Taylor, Ed Bracken, Ed Vaughn, Jim Carter,
Lee Westbrook, Norm Perron, Jim Neidig, Jim McKenzie, George Krois,
Steve Albert, Mark Towne and many others. We were the relief for the
original Gladiators. I would like to know the whereabouts of "Grumpy"
Grimaldi, who Jim McKenzie, John Lindsay, our gunner and I pulled out of
a Laos crash site with the help of a Bright Light team one fine day in
1969. I'd also like to find the former Warrant that I was giving an AC
checkride to when our 90 degree gearbox separated from the aircraft
(534)in March 1969. Thanks for the service you provide to all us old

GREAT WEBSITE!!!!
I was with the 822 sig det. right from the begining at Bragg. If anyone
remembers, the avionics shop was the only structure to survive the
sapper attack on the 10th. Durring the tet thing,It was myself and a
guy by the name of De Lores from Balt. who volunteered to replace the
perimeter lights everyday,we never climbed a pole in our lives! We must
have been nuts!

myself I'm here not there.
I'm an original member of the 57th from Bragg in April'67 to ets in
Kontum Aug '68 as crew-chief (67N20). Having made all the previous re-
unions I was disappointed to have missed the last in Nashville,
hopefully I'll still be around for the next in Vegas, which is a lot
closer to LA. I would be happy to hear from anyone of that era.

I served with the 5th AHC from May68-May69. Flew as a pilot in the 1st
platoon.
Sure would like to correspond with guys from that time. I still have
hundreds of slides from that year. Going to be looking for some kind
of device that will let me scan them into my computer, and put together
a story during that timeframe.
One day while walking back to the tent, through the Coliseum where we
parked the helicopters,...I looked west and realized that west of
Kontum the skyline was identical to that of the Denver skyline looking
west.
Chu Mom Ra - Where Long's peak is.
LZ Mile High - Lookout mountain where Buffalo Bill's grave is.
LZ Brillo Pad - where Mt. Evans is.
All in all kinda spooky. So a day doesn't go by when I look at the
skyline, (even being a native of Denver) that I don't recall those days
spent with the greatest fighting men in my life, in Kontum. If you
ever come thru Denver look to the west..see what I mean.
It was quite an experience to read all of the guest

Looking for information on some of my buddies from 1968; Pinky
Worrell, crew chief; John Billings, crew chief; Scott Olson, Ken Dacosta,
O'Dell, Rhodes---all gunners. Help me out if you can! I ran into crew
chief Art Martin not long after I got home, probably in early 1969. Also
got drunk with John Linsday(gunner) who had extended and was going back
again. Also really frieked out in the early 1980's while watching a 60
Minutes piece on Army preparedness; the General being interviewed was
Forrester, who was the Brigade commander at LZ MaryLou; I was the gunner
on his C-&-C slick with John Billings as crew chief.

I was a pilot in the 134th AHC and had some close contact with the 57th.
The 57th and 134th were both formed up at the same time in early 1967 at
Ft. Bragg. I was an original member of the 134th and we went to RVN on
the same ship as the 57th. Once there the 57th went to Kontum and we
were based out of Tuy Hoa. On occasion we worked with the 57th and
sometimes sent a few slicks to fill the gap when you guys lost some. The
57th had a hell of a time in 1968. I always admired the 57th but was
also mighty glad I wasn't based in Kontum. I remember the gunships from
the 134th went to Kontum during Tet to help fight off the VC. On the
first day they took fire when they had to land for refueling and
expended their ammunition before they even got out of the Kontum traffic
pattern.
God bless the the men of the 57th. You did a great job.

Hello;
I served with the 1st cap R.O.K. Inf. "TigerDiv." and the 9th
R.O.K. Inf "White Horse" inf 65-66-67, Call sign Ragged Scooper 94
alpha. There are probably less than 20 of us who were the Americans on
the other end of the radio while supporting the Koreans, I was in the
first team in II corps. Was on the ground in the Duc Co rubber
Plantation on a "Paul Revere" operation. The Special Forces and CIDG
company were over ran about the same time. We stacked 211 bodies in
the wire in one night. Back then we did it by the seat of our pants
and had "Spooky" and "Puff" and put air from D.A.S.C. Alpha in Saigon
in by myself and an AF sgt. from the ground with no fac's. An extreme
power trip!!!!!! and light and sound show. Nothing in my life has been
that important since. Why do we do this over and over. I try to stop
thinking of it and just can not do it. Maybe in the future wars will
be fought by men 60 and over so they don't have to remember so long.
In closing;

HI EVERYONE. I STILL REMEMBER THE 57th while serving from June 1969 to
Oct 69 with the second flight as acrewchief. I left early due to being
shot down and wounded during one of thoase FOB trips. I was medevac'd
to rhe states and spent 4 and a half months in the hospital. I returned
in June 1971 to july 72 and served with the cougar-guns. Does any of
the former cougar's remember those -"WELCOME TO THE COUGAR GUN
PARTIES''. We had some of the best gunpilots in the Two corp region
and they did their job better than some of the other gun pilots from
some of the other units. The crew chiefs ;armmament mechanics who kept
those rocket pods; mimi-guns and 40 mm going; but for one ammo man
who shared alot of everything we did was GARY (STINKY) grubbs. Hope TO
SEE AS MANY OF YOU IN NASHVLE for the reunion.

Gladiators of the 57th and the Cougars.

Great website and a great history! I'm proud to have been a part of it.
I'm seeking some assistance - if you knew or have information about Cpt
Charles E Ferrell, KIA 12/6/69, and his crew, I would appreciate if if
you would get in touch with me.

I was assigned to CCC from 9/68 -9/69 as a medic. Worked with the
Hatchet Force and rode chase ships. Have many fond memories of the
57th, particularly the ones which involve them saving my skinny butt.
Can't remember names, but do remember one red-headed warrant(?) with
very large cajones.

I was one of the old-timers. I started with the 57th at bragg in 66
right out of Rucker. Went to nam in sept 67. I was also the first
combat casualty in the unit. I was shot down in laos about 15 miles
north of leghorn on an insertion. The only survivors of my chopper were
myself and SSG Fred Zapitosky of FOBII. Fred got the Medal Of Honor
for that incident. It was a heck of a year. Your website brings back a
lot of memories both good and bad. Keep it up, I will be back.

I came up to Kontum the first week in October 1968 and left the first
week of February 1969. Worked with the maintenance crew in the hangar
and rebuilt hydraulic parts. The other half of the Dynalectron KD team
with Tom Oplinger. A great site, hope to find some more of those there
during this time frame.

With the accomplishments and tireless efforts put forth by Don
Frederick, to complete this new Gladiator page, it is my hope that
whoever shall visit will remember these efforts put forth. None of this
would happen without the beginning help of the original page that was
executed by Lee Westbrook. I thank Don Armstrong for his many hours of
research in the National Archives to which began the beginning of the
original 57th Gladiator page. The original page may still be viewed by
going to: http:// users.hey.net/~lamarbur. This new page is very
colorfull, pleasing to ones eyes, and hopefully, you will return many
times to see/read any updates. I hope you all enjoy seeing this, and
again, my sincerest apreciation to Don for the hours he donated to
complete this project.
